Bud Bates, co-founder and CEO, has maintained a lifelong connection to Yosemite and the American West. His relationship with Yosemite dates back to 1978, when his fascination with the region’s biology, geology, ecology, and natural beauty began to shape his personal and professional journey.
Originally from Florida, Bud spent nearly a decade abroad in South America and Europe, including Germany and France. His international experiences as a student and traveler broadened his appreciation for different cultures, languages, literature, and art, while ultimately leading him and his family to make California their permanent home.
Over the years, Bud has worked as a guide, artist, photographer, and community volunteer. He is fluent in five languages and has developed an extensive understanding of Yosemite and the American West through decades of exploration, guiding, photography, and conservation involvement.
His commitment to Yosemite extends beyond tourism. Bud has supported conservation and environmental initiatives dedicated to protecting the region’s natural beauty and preserving these remarkable landscapes for future generations.
As Yosemite Private Tours has evolved, so has Bud’s role. While he is less involved in the company’s daily operations today, his knowledge, experience, and original vision remain an important part of the foundation on which the company was built.
